Comrade Mrinal Das
Comrade Mrinal Das, member of the West Bengal State Committee of CPI(M) and member of the national executive committee of CITU, has breathed last on 4th January, 2014 due to heart attack. He was 66 and was one of the secretaries of the West Bengal State Committee of CITU. He has contributed immensely as the pivotal organizer of the working people’s movement in the unorganized sectors.
He kept on discharging his organizational responsibilities despite of his ill health. He had to be admitted in the hospital in the recent time. Still he visited Coochbehar only few days back for the organizational reason. He had to face delay in the train service due to bomb blast in that visit. He suffered by the sudden cardiac attack in the early morning. Doctors declared him dead when he was taken to the hospital.
The meeting of the West Bengal State Committee of CPI(M) was adjourned with a note of condolence. The party leaders and leaders and activists of several trade unions went to his home.
Biman Basu, Secretary of CPI(M) West Bengal State Committee, has expressed profound grief over the demise of Comrade Mrinal Das. He said that he knew Comrade Mrinal from the old days of students’ movement. He had to overcome many odds to peruse education during the semi-fascist period in West Bengal. He directly joined the trade union movement after student movement. He marked his contribution in that front especially in the unorganized sectors, he recapitulated.
Central Secretariat of CITU expressed its profound grief over the demise of Comrade Mrinal Das. The condolence message said that the contribution of Comrade Mrinal Das in organizing people in Railway contract workers, hawkers, mutia-majdur, rickshaw and van pullers, municipal workers and health workers under the flag of CITU will always be remembered. CITU also conveyed its condolences to his bereaved family members. Shyamal Chakraborty, president of the West Bengal State Committee of CITU and Dipak Dasgupta, general secretary of the West Bengal State Committee of CITU have expressed grief over the demise of Comrade Mrinal Das.
He was born in 14th January, 1948 in Khulna of Bangladesh. He came to Kolkata and started living in Netajinagar. He was student of Netajinagar School and Netajinagar College. He was elected district committee member of BPSF in 1969. He was attacked for organizing people against the semi-fascist period in 1971. He was elected as the member of the national executive committee of SFI in 1971. He was elected as the West Bengal state secretary of SFI from the Barrackpore conference in 1978. He joined workers’ movement after the glorious contribution in the students’ movement. He led many struggles of unorganized workers and was elected to various responsibilities in CITU.
He was elected as one of the Secretaries of the West Bengal State Committee of CITU in 1986. He visited Cuba as the representative of CITU in a delegation. He also participated in the conference of the World Trade Union Federation. He also had written book on issues related to the unorganized sectors of work.
